OpenStack: Chmouel (Rackspace)

I will introduce you to the OpenStack community and provide an outline of the core projects:

Nova Compute: open source software and standards for large-scale deployments of automatically provisioned virtual compute instances.

Swift Object Storage: open source software and standards for large-scale, redundant storage of static objects.

Glance Image Repository: provides discovery, registration, and delivery services for virtual disk images.

OpenStack Identity: Code-named Keystone, The OpenStack Identity Service provides unified authentication across all OpenStack projects and integrates with existing authentication systems.

OpenStack Dashboard: Dashboard enables administrators and users to access and provision cloud-based resources through a self-service portal.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to try it yourself and get your hands on with the OpenStack project.

MazzOps: Mazz Mosley

A developers tale of finding herself in the land of Ops to get a new service up and running at artfinder.com. Think Alice in Wonderland but with a Mazz instead of Alice and when I say Wonderland I mean head explodey-land. By the end of my story you'll learn how I made friends with the Jabberwocky(Ops) and discovered that tailing logs is actually quite soothing.

Capistano and EC2 Autoscaling

When I first started working with Ruby at EC2, one of the first questions that came to mind was, how do we ensure that our applications can always be deployed to whichever servers are currently live? Traditional capistrano requires that servers addresses be specified in the deploy.rb, which means that when your IP address changes (DHCP lease expiring or the server being replaced) you have to update your projects before you can deploy again. We modified Capistrano so Amazon became the authority for which services reside on which hosts.

It turned out, that was the first step in a really interesting process. More questions popped up as soon as we demonstrated that our original idea was possible.

'Can we automate the deployment to new servers?'

'Can we use Amazon auto-scaling and load balancers to provide multi-region resilient, self-healing applications?'

With a little work, a little ingenuity, and a lot of cooperation, we have implemented exactly that.
